The Danish-Iranian composer and percussionist Jaleh Negari releases her new album Weaver ~ (limited edition vinyl on Eget Værelse). The album presents an atmospheric processing of field-recordings from travels in Denmark, Iran and Indonesia, which have been altered into graphic notations and from here converted once again into new music. Careful translations of the material, which create evocative soundscapes reminiscing a new kind of science fiction.
Jaleh Negari has been a key figure of the experimental scene in Copenhagen for more than a decade, appearing a.o. as a member of the bands Selvhenter and Pinkunoizu and as founder of the collective and label Eget Værelse (eng: A Room Of Ones Own). In 2016, Negari released her debut solo album Arch Waves; a release that besides cementing Negaris unique knack for percussion also highlighted her work as a composer.
Later this year, material from the album Weaver ~ will be part of a solo exhibition by Jaleh Negari on Akademiet For Åben Lytning (english: Academy of Open Listening) in Odense, Denmark. Through the exhibition the mutual exchange between sound, performance and graphics are approached in the same manner as the communication that takes place in the underground fungal networks, which connects the trees with other organisms. The exhibition will be an installation of graphic scores, a multichannel piece in 7 bluetooth speakers and a quadro-phonic sound layer made of the field-recordings from Weaver ~. A spacious experience, which will reflect the making of the album all while becoming an independent work of its own.

At points, this reminds me of the bands that defined early chillwave, like Ducktails, Memory Tapes, or Predator Vision; the guitars are similarly reverb-y and chorus-drenched, chords splashing out lazily and slow, swaggers subverted into saunters. However, the Eastern melodic flavor gives this more of an overtly mystical aesthetic, and the instrumentation and compositional elements are far more exotic and interesting. Highly recommended.
